Last stop, Hackberry, Arizona, 2009

I found this old car in a lot behind the old Hackberry General Store that stands along old Historic Route 66. I include only the front section of the car to stress the abrupt nature of its last stop. Its tire is flat, its paint rusted, and it faces the long branches of a tree that seem to be reaching out to grab it.

Ah, the power of opposing forces, Celia. This image is, as you note, all about tension and contrast. The branch seems dead, and the car certainly is. Yet because of the tension provided by the contrasting directions, both manage to live, at least within my frame.

This is an amazing photo! Everything is immobile and static here, but you breathe so much life and tension into it with your careful framing, drawing our attention to the opposing forces of direction between car and tree. The tree does look eager to devour and consume it, and the car does seem completely helpless in its sorry state.
