Coppery clouds, Saguaro National Park, Tucson, Arizona, 2009

This image is all about rhythms. The band of horizontal clouds, turned coppery orange by a setting sun, beats time against the stand of vertical silhouetted Saguaro cacti that soar below them. Clouds hold reflected color for only few moments – I was able to catch this color at its peak.

A second "wow" for this image -- thanks, Alina, for appreciating the shapes and colors here. The shapes, of course, are unique to this part of Arizona --Saguaro cacti only grow at certain altitudes and in certain conditions. Here in Southern Arizona, near Tucson, we see the largest and most densely packed array of them, and when seen silhouetted against a flaming sunset, they become unforgettable.

WOW, beautiful shapes and colors

Thanks, Rosemarie -- nature provides the colors and the plants, while the camera relates them and preserves the moment.

Fabulous diagonal composition and colors.

Thanks, Jenene - sometimes nature cooperates and sometimes it does not. Traveling photographers often have to make the best of what they have to work with. On this particular evening the clouds were spectacular in the late evening light, and we were very fortunate to be able to work with them. I saw the counterpoint you mentioned instantly, and drew the opposing rhythms together in my frame to make it work.

This is a wow image, Phil. Those streaks of feathery copper are the perfect counterpoint to the marching line of Saguaro.
