Gallery Eighty-three: Impressions of the Galapagos – an extended photo-essay

An extended photo-essay allows us to relate and sequence dozens of expressive images that can accumulate meaning as the viewer progresses through them. This gallery was made during a two-week journey to Ecuador’s legendary Galapagos Islands in just such a format. As you go through them, they will gradually familiarize you with the essence of the Galapagos National Park, revealing the nature of the place itself, as well as the nature of the creatures that live among its islands. Every image tells its own story, but when studied cumulatively, they can express a deeper and broader significance. In my captions, I will note my reasons for making and using each of these images.

During the two weeks I spent in the Galapagos - a group of 15 islands on the equator, about 500 miles west of Ecuador -- I shot more than 8,000 images, kept less than 300, and offer 82 of them in this photographic essay. The extended photo-essay format can work well as an online gallery on a single subject such as this one, or even as a self-published photographic book.

I present this gallery, as usual, in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond.
