Gallery Fifty Seven: Expressions of Faith

Photographing expressions of faith is an exercise in defining human values. Faith is based on the human spirit, and all that is spiritual. No country on earth is more openly spiritual than India with its vast Hindu population and the third largest Islamic population on earth. Faith in India goes far beyond deeply personal beliefs. Religious faith on the subcontinent is expressed openly and publicly on nearly every street. I have been looking forward to putting together a substantial gallery on expressing aspects of religious faith in all of its diverse manifestations for some time now. My visit to India in the early spring of 2008 provided me with an unparalleled opportunity to do justice to this vast topic in a substantive way.

I quickly found many different ways to express spiritual faith photographically. Yes, we can photographic people at prayer and in meditation. But we can also symbolically define the expressive aspects of the buildings they may worship in, spiritual icons and customs, priests and gurus, rituals and costume, and more.

I explored a considerable amount of faith-based content in India, and I launch this gallery with an initial portfolio of 32 images made there that I hope will help you to better appreciate the diverse ways in which we can visually approach spiritual subject matter. I hope to create and add more significant examples of imagery based on the expression of faith as I travel elsewhere.

I present this gallery, as usual, in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond.
