Gallery Forty-Three: When doors, arches and gates express ideas

Doors, arches and gates are ubiquitous. They are the portals to homes, offices, stores, churches, mosques, closets, cabinets, fortresses, cities, and palaces of all kinds and sizes. Many travel photographers ignore their symbolic content. Some may shoot many different doors as an exercise in cataloging various colors and styles, but such images generally describe, rather than interpret. I try to use doors, arches and gates as essential interpretive components. I use them in my imagery as abstracting devices, frames, cultural symbols and signposts. Doors, arches and gates can be powerful communicators. They can deny or accept, hide or reveal, and most importantly, often symbolize what goes on within them. If we can look at doors, arches and gates as communicators, our photographs will be the better for it.

I begin this gallery on expressing ideas with doors, arches and gates with images I made in Morocco in December of 2006. I hope to add additional examples to this gallery from images made on my upcoming travels as well. I present this gallery in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a detailed caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond.
