Gallery Fourteen: Expressing the meaning of buildings and structures

Many travel photographers take pictures of the interesting buildings and structures they visit as keepsakes or souvenirs. By picturing a building, they are able to keep its appearance in memory. But I prefer to go well beyond that level, and instead make pictures of the buildings and structures I encounter on my travels to express meaning. In other words, I ask myself what a building means to me and then do whatever I can to capture that meaning in a photograph, instead of merely recording its appearance.

This gallery demonstrates how I do this. It initially contained examples of buildings and structures I photographed in the summer of 2004 in China. I've added building pictures made elsewhere as well. Most of these images are selected from my archive digital travel articles posted at: http://www.pnd1.smugmug.com/ .

This gallery is presented in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a detailed caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond.
