Occurs: mountains, piedmont and coastal plain
Habitat: rich moist forests, bottomlands, and slopes
Common

Several dozen plants were in bloom today. Only plants with a pair of leaves are old enough to flower. The name "mayapple" comes from the fact the fruit resembles an apple. The ripe fruits are edible while the rest of the plant contains a variety of alkaloids and is poisonous.
