Sphagnum moss

While walking in the woods the ground in places feels spongy. This is due to
the buildup of sphagnum moss underneath the leaf litter. Bright green areas near
shallow pools of water are common throughout the woods. Here is a close-up view of the
common moss commercially sold in a dry for as peat moss. It is indicative of acidic soils.
