Art, you have to understand the fate of the base proper after the BRAC closure. The airfield is a commercial operation now. Some of the remaining base has been razed and commercial warehouse and light industrial facilities have been built. As of 2010 when I left the area much of that was unoccupied. The remainder of the base, including all of the housing areas, has been undergoing a slow cleanup effort as it is an EPA Superfund toxic site. Yes, the very areas that housed decades of US service men and women and their families are so highly contaminated that the cleanup isn't expected to be completed until 2020. Even in demolition of barracks there was the removal of tons of hazardous material including asbestos. Widespread soil and groundwater contamination from jet fuel, solvents, and widespread use of the pesticide Dieldrin left behind a $150 million dollar cleanup job.

Ahhhh, what memories. When BRAC started closing bases, I do not believe they understood the grief they caused not only in the local military and civilian communities. However they formed a circular firing squad to insure that more money was consumed in the actual pay outs to numerous contractors such as my self that had to be paid off for existing and future contracts than was actually saved by the entire operation. how smart they would have been to just simply place they various closed installations into a "stand down" condition. But noooo, we had to let many much needed bases rot in place, sell them to the Chinese (Long Beach Navel Station) or sell them off very cheaply to their friends, such as Ft. Ord, Ca (Went for 40 thou to one of John McCains dear friends who then resold one of the best properties on the west coast (LOCATED ON Monteray Bay)for A PALTRY 722 million
