Just a couple of shots from an improv set with Josh Smith (sax) and Ches Smith (kit) that I witnessed at the Tomain Temple, Oakland. I didn't use any flash, as the mood and tone was far to sensitive to something so obnoxious. Yes, I love flash, almost too much. I do make exceptions. This was outstanding to watch. Both of these kids know their instruments. Ches doesn't 'play' drums, he works with them, through them, around them until they submit and he backs off with abruptness. Silence becomes audible as Josh can't be heard breathing through the brass, yet dampenning the reed to mute the flutter. Slower, slower, slower... silence. Words are lousy vehicles. People should go out more often and enjoy themselves more often.
