I grew up in Brownsville (1950) & left in 1968. These photos bring back alot of memories but would like to know if there are any photos from those years available in print somewhere? I loved living there & have many fond memories of a beautiful city & a quiet & easy living lifestyle. Thanks for preserving the city thru your beautiful photos.

My date of the El Charro Days was wrong... It was before 46 or 47 because my sister was not born then... Probably was 44 or 45....

Don Rentfrow I was born in Brownsville in 1936... My father, Evan C. Rentfrow was a City of Brownsville Policeman and personally built the first two-way automobile radio system for the force... My Grandmother and step-grandfather were the managers of the orginal Brownsville Yacht Club when it was on its orginal land site (east side of the channel)... There is very little that I remember of downtown, other than the Catholic school that I attended... Later I remember living in a housing addition where "Snake King" kept wild animals near the entrance to it... I still vividly remember attending a "El Charro Days" shingdig at the El Jardin Hotle where Xavier Cugat was the headliner entertainment attraction and my Mother and I shaking hands with him... 1946 I think....maybe '47... My father later on was a radio operator and navigator for PAA and flew out of Brownsville Airport to central and south America.. The terminal that is shown in your gallery is one that I do remember most vividly... Fond memories of it....

Fantastic gallery of some fantastic places! The El Jardin Hotel you captured in a great couple of pics. My GG Grandfather built and owned the hotel and in fact, he died in the lobby while visiting from San Antonio! It is quite a shame to see it in such condition, I would love to see it restored as a hotel or even apartments...if anyone is interested, I am in the business and would like to hear from you.

I am glad someone has taken the time to capture some of the wonderful culture Brownsville has to offer. Not to mention the awesome historical landscapes often found in the downtown area. I was born in Brownsville and I hope to get some good pictures myself next time I go down to visit family. There is this historic nostalgic feeling that I get when I walk the streets of downtown Brownsville. A feeling I can only get from that area, very special to me. I used to work downtown at Parra Furniture & Loan, and would always enjoy a walk though the downtown area during lunch or after work. Now my mind shifts to the awesome Mexican food that you could find at certain restaurants in the area, memories.

It all seems like yesterday. Some places have not changed. Some of the areas, buildings, resacas and historic places seem untouched by time. I long to be back in beautiful Brownsville. Thank you, Mr. Martin the photographs. They do rekindle very fond memories. Miguel Palafox

Mr Martin, This is without question the most comprehensive and professional photo gallery of Brownsville I have ever viewed. I fancy myself a photographer and artist. I was born and raised in Brownsville. You have captured the photos I always meant to take but never have gotten serious about on my visits home. I love the way you have captured the old buildings still standing and being used for other venues. The most telling of the change time brings are the photos of the Majestic. From Saturday morning cartoons to the launch pad into the dating world this was "The Place". Thank you for taking my mind on a stroll through memory lane.

The building labeled El Tapiz was the site of my grandfather's hardware store- Flores Hardware Co- from 1938- 1958.

I just love the memories you brought back. Your pictures are spectacular. I was born in Brownsville and live in Austin, but there is nothing like my Brownsville "querido"! I wish the Majestic would have been restored. I remember going to the movies as a little girl and then as a teenager. My boyfriend was the projectionist. What memories! Thanks!

What a treat to run across this website. I was born in Brownsville (1950) and although I live in Dallas, I haven't been back in at least 20-25 years. These photos are quite a trip down memory lane. The Majestic Theater !!! Great memories of that place and of the diner that was across the street: Fisher's. Many many thanks. After having seen these photos, I will plan a taking a trip down there soon. I miss So. Padre Island and can't imagine how that has changed.
