It would take a span of time but eventually age, experience and wisdom would guide us to conclude the years we spent as youth growing up in Charleswood ... were some of the best years of our lives. Traveling life's journey from children to young adults together we shared moments of laughter, tears, joy and sadness ... some of which will fondly return as you gaze upon these photos; for the most part ... they were good times ... and upon reflection we were most fortunate to have been provided the opportunity to grow up in such a place ... and during such times. Upon studying the background and referring to memory I believe the house door under Bob Musser's arm is the front door of our house which faced Elmhurst Rd. ... behind and to the right of these fellows was his garden and close inspection will show it is flooded ... now, I wonder aloud if this wasn't taken during the 1950 Winnipeg flood ... I was born in 1941 so would have been 9 years old ... Bob Musser and Ted Knight were a few years older than I so their age would have been 11-13 years ... which is the age they appear to be ... ??? Chester's / Bloomer's Store / Chester's Residence Research amongst former Charleswood residents of the 1940 era concludes these two buildings were located on the corner of Elmhurst Rd and Roblin Blvd. The brick building in the foreground was a grocery store/Post Office and operated by Tommy Chester then later by the Bloomer family. Later it was named "The Willows" and served as a short order restaurant ie hamburgers, pizza, etc. The house behind the store was also owned by Tommy Chester who rented it to Bill McKennitt's mother and the family (Marnee, Bill & Sharon) lived there for a number of years. Anybody rember Bills Chip stand across from the Legion was my Mom& Dads, We also had the store beside it.Icannot remember it't name.We left Charleswood after my mom passed in 1966.Both buildings are gone now'Would like to hear any comments. Murray Pottinger

I came across this site quite by accident and it certainly brought back memories. I lived with my dad and sister (Helen) on Royal Road (now called Laxdale Drive) next door to David Pike. My best friends in those days were Russell Swanky and Ronald Richot. There was a large field behind my place on Liberty street (now called varsity view) where we played most of the time. The tough guys in those days were the Johnsons, Geroge was the second oldest I think. I had a crush on Judy Trediak. I was in that grade 5 picture and I think I am the person you are calling Dick Morton. I am Joe Thacker. The reason I guess that I recall these things is that the teacher (Miss Sheldrake) was one of only 3 teachers in my life that I recall taught me a lot, even though in those days I did not appreciate it. She really cared about her students and as I recall she tried to help Walter woods who was in our class with his speech problem. She suggested he go back to trying to write with his left hand as he had been forced to be right handed. I never knew if it worked or not but she was always trying to do her best for her kids. I had a paper route that only had 25 papers but it took me 2 hours to finish it because the route covered so much distance. I had not thought about this stuff in years and thank you for stirring these great memories.

Hi Fred: woud it be possible to determine the date the Searle Grain Elevator was built on the Grand Trunk Railway( Now CNR) on the north side of Wilkes Rd,. near Elmhurst.? It was later taken over by Federal Grain. The Railway line is now a walking Trail. Was there ever a railway depot built near the elevator called Searle? I have a picture of the elevator and station.taken in 1938. If I have youe E-Mail I can forward the picture

Hi Fred. I recently discovered your web site and the great collection of historical school photos of Charleswood days. I attended Chapman School from 1947 to 1955, and spent just a few months in the new Charleswood collegiate before moving to Winnipeg in 1955. Your photos brought back many memories of those days. I live in Gimli, MB, and am currently writing my autobiography. You have one photo on your web site I would like to use in the book - the building on the corner of Elmhurst and Roblin. This used to be the Varsity View Post Office and store. We lived on Coventry Rd, and had about 100 chickens. My dad would take a crate of eggs on his bicycle to the store to sell them. It never became a successful venture. Can I use this photo? Can I get the name of the owner of the picture so I could credit the source? I will be self-publishing the book, and I hope to recover the costs of its printing. It definitely is not for profit! Keep up your good work. Hope to meet you at a future reunion.
