09-CR210 Hamilton Co.jpg

Hamilton county, Texas

A Pratt Through Truss bridge in County Road 210 in Hamilton County, Texas. This bridge is badly damaged from a tree that has fallen on it, part of the tree is still dangling from the left end post and the right end post is badly bent, it is difficult to see here. There is also a piece dangling from the top lateral strut and the sway strut is also bent, there is a bit of tilt to the deck. This bridge has been replaced by a new concrete bridge in the background and is far removed from the new road. Spanning the Leon River, this bridge was built in 1900 and is 175 feet long

That is a very weak Portal Brace design. Only two rivets attaching the Portal crossmember, and only a single vertical and two diagonal brace construction. Similar bridges of the day had stronger, more elaborate lattice cross-bracing Portal designs that probably would have withstood the tree with much less damage. This is a critical weak point for Through Truss designs. These elements were left off to save money, even though it compromised the structure.
