Finland And a Hop to Tallinn.

Went on vacation to beautiful Finland in August 2010.
The lakes, populated with every-sized islands featuring Nordic pines make for a scenery quite engaging.
It's a shame the Finns seem dead serious about keeping the main and, especially, secondary roads running through the forests, without so much of a glimpse of the many thousand lakes, hidden away by the trees.
Detours and expeditions into some obscure gravel roads are a must if the lake scene is to be duly enjoyed.
Fortunately, this is compensated in some specific locations like Koli and Savonlinna where winding down a road takes us along unforgettable views, combining water and land.
Helsinki itself, is, perhaps, one of the most unremarkable capitals I visited so far but, even there, the sea vs. land play accounts for some great scenery whenever a boat becomes the chosen means of transportation.
We took the opportunity and made a quick ferry hop to neighbor Estonia for a day visit to Tallinn, which makes a stark contrast with Helsinki in what pertains to architecture, history and overall atmosphere.
A remarkable, beautiful city that really warrants a visit.
The Finns are a kind and welcoming people, making for a very agreeable and balanced mix between the traditional Scandinavian reserved nature and the more outgoing and exuberant ways of their East Slavic neighbors.
Highlights of the trip, apart from the already mentioned Koli and Savonlinna areas, were Kuopio, Tampere, Rauma and Turku.
The Aland islands were the closing and high point of the trip, as they constitute a very unique scenery, where literally thousands of islands with areas ranging from a dinner table surface to several square miles, sprinkled along the Aland Sea make for a very special canvas for all kinds of photography.
Here's my take on this beautiful country and neighbor Estonian city.
Please, keep dropping by as there will be many, many photos added over the coming months (...years?)
