I went to Wingo from 1955 to 1963. Some of the best summers, some of the best memories, and made some great friends.

I went to Wingo from about 1955-1963. Some of the best summers ever with some of the best people.

I was a camper for 6 summers (1955-61). The Berks were my aunt and uncle. The highlight was being Anna in The King and I. My only regret is that my parents couldn’t attend the performance and no one took pictures. I loved camp, especially in my younger years. I fondly remember Director Tony Udine and his daughter, Betty.
What fun to stroll down Memory Lane!
Amy Wainer Watts 28-Aug-2022 01:11
Amy Wainer Watts here. Wingoers! I just stumbled on this site. I went to Wingo from age 7 (Bluebird bunk with counselor Charlie) all the way to Owls. My sister Judie Wainer Schneider and brother, Jonathan (“Goliath) Wainer (so small he spent the first summer riding on his counselor - the Shnur’s shoulders) were there also.. I ended up living in Hawaii but would trade it for a moment back on the sandy shores of Bear Lake, skipping rocks and watching June bugs dance on the water at sunset. Wingo was happiest of places childhood memories. .

My name was bunny shurkin and I was at camp wingo as a camper and counselor. Camp is one of my favorite memories. Color war, the beach and rifelry among my favorite although I would never pick up a gun again. I remember Barbara moody with her accordions the shows esp guys and dolls were something. I still remember all the words. At dinner tonight with a young woman who goes to camp outsid3 of Portland and she stirred up all these memories. I was a bobcat, wildcat, owl but can’t remember the others. I remember the guys taking the Berks dining table and putting it out on the raft. I am still amazed at the talent during color war. The songs and words were brilliant. Marjorie lutz. We were good friends. I am Bunny Lichtenstein and live in Santa Fe NM. Would love to talk. Margorie. Mickey topal ,names I remember. What a trip down memorie lane. My husband still talks about th3 wonderful reunion we had. Fought going and ended up jealous and so impressed

I was a counselor of the oldest girls' group cabin named the Owls in 1959. I taught tennis, but was no great tennis player. However, I played in the final round of a competition against the best teenaged player from White Plains, New York. I'm pretty sure she beat me.
Faith Taylor 12-Mar-2019 11:31
Faith Taylor, sister of Van Taylor, Father Cecil Taylor-chef at Camp Wingo. Memories at camp Wingo for me were how beautiful it was, and the songs, we use to sing. W I N G O !!! I WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO REACH OUT TO ANYONE IF WE WERE REMEMBERED.
Elliot Brodsky 25-Aug-2018 01:51
We, my sister Jane and I were at Wingo 1955-57. Wonderful memories. We came up from Philadelphia. Train to Boston. Boston to Portland. Don’t remember after that. Over the years tried to find bunk mates to no avail. Remember part in Guys and Dolls. Went back to Maine for several weeks in 1984. Found a trailer park. Sad.

I couldn't find the Camp Wingo Facebook page. Is it still active?
Guest 27-Sep-2015 16:50
My brother and I attended Camp Wingo in the late 50's and early 60's. My brother, Ken, is 5 years older. He was in the Lions, I was in the Beavers. The other cabins were the Leopards, Panthers, Eagles, Tigers, and Goldbugs, in ascending order of age. In the summer of 1964 I had an accident while I was playing catcher in the softball game and someone threw a bat which hit me in the mouth and I had extensive dental injuries . that was the last time but either of us went to camp Wingo although we both still have fond memories of it and the lake there was beautiful .

Further to my comment of August 12, 2013, an administrator at Camp Fatima did indeed send a DVD with film footage of Camp Wingo from before 1943. It has a background music track on it. There is probably an hour of footage in total. I am uploading the footage to Youtube. Simply search in Youtube for "Camp Wingo," and you will see the footage in Chapters 1 to 14.

I just visited the site of Camp Wingo in Barnstead, NH. The site was sold to the Archdiocese of New Hampshire in 1943 (?) and re-opened as Camp Fatima, a Catholic camp, in 1947 (?). I guess Wingo "moved" to Maine at that point. Fatima is still operated by the diocese but, according to its web site, it welcomes campers of all faiths. My father was a camper in the '20's, and I remember him talking about it. I happened to be in the area this weekend and stopped in. A staff member was well aware that it had been Camp Wingo. He showed me some photos in the office from when it was Camp Wingo, and said that another staff person had a video that had been assembled of photos and early home movies of Camp Wingo. They were going to transfer the video to DVD and they said they would mail it to me. The camp seems clean and well-run, although not particularly high-end. There are few structures remaining from when it was Wingo, and there are many structures that were not there when it was Wingo. This week it is hosting a camp for special-needs kids, and parents were there dropping kids off. It is a boys' camp during the regular summer season (although for this week it seemed co-ed), and its sister camp, Camp Bernadette, is in Wolfeboro. They couldn't have been more gracious about talking about Wingo. This gentleman said that someone had driven in 6 or 7 years ago, saying that he had attended the camp in 1917, and he wanted to look around. Elliot Matz esmatz@aol.com

I was at Camp Wingo in NH during the WWII years 1941-1945. Hadn't thought about it for years until we were reminiscing this Memorial Day weekend. Lots of great memories. If anyone remembers me, drop me an email at stanbu@gmail.com I was the bugler who woke everyone up each morning.

To be perfectly correct, there were two camp wingos. Both run by the Berks. The camp in NH was bought by the Catholic Church and then the Berks reopened in Harrison Maine.

As a technical matter the camp was in South Waterford with a Harrison mailing address. I have visited it recently and sadly it has become a poorly put together housing development. However, when you stand on the beach and look out over the the lake, you realize how beautiful the spot truly was and is. It just doesn't change. I have a number of old photos that I will try and get posted on the Facebook page.

Harrison is right....not Waterford. To self: Repeat after me--Waterford is where the crystal was, Harrison is where the Wingo was.

Actually, Leslie, Camp Wingo is in Harrison, Maine
Diane Pearlman Schwartz 26-Apr-2010 12:24
I was there from 1958-1962...My brother Danny went from like 1954 until the Camp was sold.

So funny to find this link! I too went to Wingo and recently "found" my favorite counsellor Roberta Steinberg on facebook! Love my old memories of very special summers. Sadly when we went back for a "reunion" so many years ago I was saddened to think of the camp as an unglamourous site-and funny but I think Chet Baker and Carol are relatives of my husband Jeff- and I bet this was the same camp you went to just in a different location.

In the summer of '62, I worked for the Berks in Waterford as Wingo's camp clerk. Among my duties was filling campers' candy orders, raising the flag at dawn before rushing into the office to play a recorded version of reveille over the camp's loudspeakers, lowering the flag at dusk before rushing into the office to play a recorded version of 'Taps' over the same loudspeakers, and trying to survive as a mutant form--no longer a boy, not yet a man, too old to be a camper, not accomplished enough to be a counselor--of Wingo life. It was a tough gig, but I've never been able to evict my memories of the place from my head, and the names of the other people who worked there, that year--among them Marcia Rubine, Byron Bahl, Bonnie Laden, Diane Alexander, Ellen Fishman, Ed Hinton, and an enigmatic gentleman named Roger Clarke--will, I'm sure, be with me until someone plays 'Taps' for me.

My sister and I (Chester and Carol Baker) went to a Camp Wingo in the mid 1940's. Is this the same camp? Did this Wingo exist in the 40's?

I found some old love letters from someone who worked at Camp Wingo in the 1930's I am trying to track down the lady who wrote these letters, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I know her name is Lynn and she wrote these letters to a Mr. Samual Slosberg. Any help would be great.
