shit hit the "fan" is from the bags of dung being slung from the vessle and breaking free whereupon they hit the Fantail (back) of the ship. the back of the ship is where the wind ususally comes from blowing forwads over the rest of the ship.... thus shit hitting the fan meant stinky troubble for all on board...

Funny ... but this is clearly a Photoshop job. I found a higher res version of the pic elsewhere and blew it up in Photoshop. The sign and logo are pasted in. Also note the barely visible words "Zaphod's Wombat" on the green roof. I googled that and found someone with that user ID at bt3a.com who is fond of tricks with graphics.

And the explanation of the origin of "shit" is full of it. -- Mark B

Is this a real place or is it a mock-up? If it is real I have to know where it is!!!!!!

PULEEZZZZ tell me where this is! I've been there so long, you might be able to help me "find" myself.

Thanks!

How appropriate considering that 'shit' originated maybe 300 years ago as an acronym for 'ship high in transit.' Burlap bales of dung that were used for heating fuel were shipped on sail boats and had 'shit' written on the bales to indicate it needed to be kept up off the wet lower deck. Otherwise it could soak up the water and besides getting very heavy, it would chemically react, creating flammable and very smelly methane gas.
Don't know how, but the phrase 'shit hitting the fan' also originates from transporting dung on a sail boat, below deck.
