CAMP CEDARCREST in GREEN HARBOR, MA

NEW!! Nov. 2017 - the photos from page 2 and on contributed by Diane Zawacki THANKS!! sorry for the repeats) Formerly known as the Immaculate Conception Camp. This Camp was located just east of the Winslow House on Rt. 139 where the Gotham Hill neighborhood is today. "As I recall, it was owned by Fr. Obrien from the Immaculate Conception Church in Everett. It operated as a summer camp for mostly local city kids. That parish had a school, grades 1 through 8, about 300 kids. So there was a ready customer base. That school has fallen onhard times recently. The portion that was visible from 139 was the boys part. Over the hill was the girls part. Most who went stayed for two weeks. It was really popular with the kids in the fifties and sixties, but then got sold and subdivided in the seventies I think. I am not sure if Fr. Obrien passed away and his estate sold it, or if he did for some reason or another." (comments from Goodguy) The camp was originally the Immaculate Conception Boys Brigade. It was owned by a trust controlled by the Immaculate Conception Parish in Everett and started by Monsignor Hartigan. The original camp was along Careswell St. After a few years Monsignor purchased 2 other camps on top of the hill and combined them into Camp Cedar Crest. The other camps were Camp Malden and Camp Melrose. The girls camp and Monsignors house were located on top of the hill. The boys camp and dining hall were located at the bottom of the hill. In 1971, Monsignor decided to close the camp and the trust sold it for a subdivision. Several of the houses in the subdivision were originally camp buildings which were renovated. My grandfather was one of the founding trustees of the camp and was one until he died. My uncle built the houses in the subdivision. In the 1920s 3 seasonal children's camps were created on the west end of the hill. The Immaculate Conception Boys Brigade, under the direction of Monsignor Edward M. Hartigan from the Immaculate Conception Church in Everett, MA, bought out the other 2 camps and created 1 camp. At the time the hill did not have any trees since it had been farmland for a number of years. There was a growth of small cedar trees on the top of the hill. This inspired Monsignor Hartigan to name the combined camps "Cedar Crest" and the name was emblazoned on the side of the hill in white painted stones. Ever since, the entire hill (and this section of town) has been called Cedar Crest. All of the original comments can still be seen on the main photo gallery page. I remember the truck ride to beach, canteen, Msgr Hartigan, ? Did Msgr. Have a sister there? . Lining up for meals first reciting a prayer , Making bracelets with gimp, .Going to the chapel praying in fear because of some worldwide crisis, possibly the Cuban Missle Crisis., 1960’s, Singing, I’ve got that Cedar Crest feeling up in my head, up in my head, ....and on. Recently, out of the blue, I thought about Marshfield/Green Harbor and Camp Cedar Crest and wondered when it ceased to exist. Google brought me to this page and to my surprise I recognized a few names in the comments. My name is Richard (Dick) Leger and I was a seminarian/counselor during the summers of 1962 and 1963 (one of the ones Ginny T mentioned that were not to be fraternized with). Ginny, I was happy to read that you live in Ireland-The last time we spoke sometime in the late 1960’s, your dream was to work in Ireland. I’m glad you made it happen. To continue, actually I was not a counselor because I drove the infamous trucks that went back and forth to the beach each day and occasionally to the roller skating rink. The first summer that I was there, the stake truck was a 1947 (?) Studebaker! Whenever you wanted to shift, you had to double clutch it and slam the lever into the gear you wanted. The following summer we truck drivers were relieved to find a new Chevy. We would not drive fast but everyone always thought we were flying. I lived in Braintree for a few years and discovered that Mrs Hughes lived with her daughter just up the street from me. Small world. I think we all had a great time. I remember the flat bed truck(s)? with fence that used to carry the kids to the beach in the late 60's and early 70's. As I recall, there was an accident where one camper fell out on Canal street. I also recall hearing reveley being played at sunset. I grew up on the Careswell land.

I was there in the during the fiftys I remember Fr Hartigan in Everett he was a great man. I loved the archery, boxing night, gymp lessons. It was a good place to grow up.

I remember an incident in St James cabin in which two boys were caught smoking by the counselors, for their punishment they were forced to smoke a stogie and preceded to upchuck most of their spaghetti dinner. This would have been around 1971

I grew up in Newton, Massachusetts and as we approach another summer I still have such fond memories of the three years I attended Camp Cedar Crest back in the late 1960s early 70s. However I never really cared very much for those cold showers, and didn’t think it was fair that the Counselors had hot water and we didn’t.

Hi McDude, if this is you! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for adding the photos and text to the website. The photos are priceless, thank you Dianne Zawacki. The photos add a little forensic check on the camp time line. First, the waltz was last done in Gowns and Tuxes in 1969. Then in 1970 Gowns and dress clothes for the boys. I remember many years and a few waltzes where the highlight of the Minstrel show for the kitchen staff. It was also great to see one more photo of our cook Mrs. Sullivan (Nina) and that years staff. She was a treasure and the foundation of many years of great camp food. The pictures of a camp tour of 1972 already shows the eventual dismantling of the boys camp. The 2 remaining wood structure are Reno (kitchen crew) and Don Bosco (Sr Boys) were eventually moved and made into homes on Gorham Hill Drive. There is one more building, a smaller cabin, that was removed to a local property and made into shed. Great history and for some of us a part of our youth. Our breakfasts at Bickfords in Stoneham still happen on a random basis. We last met on November 18th. We plan on meeting, weather permitting, on December 16, 2017 at 10:30am same place. Join us and relive the camp saga. Keep the stories and the photos coming. Look forward to seeing you at Breakfast. Oh yes, David Butler joined us at one of our Breakfast Meetings. I remember the long truck rides to the beach. I was there in the summers of 46,47 and 48, I think that's close. I remember the long hikes around the area, the old black tar paper shack with bullet holes they said was Machine Gun Kelly's hideout. Also marching to the Dinning Hall around the big field. I also remember some the items from the First Aid training classes. Hope this note brings back memories.

I was at the camp for three summers, 47,48,49. I remember those long rides in the back of the truck to get to the beach. Rich Michalski are you Joe's brother? I loved your mom. She was the head waitress in 1958. That was my tenth year at Cedar Crest, and I know I knew her before that but all these years later the summer years run together. Don't tell Joe but I was madly in love with him that summer. 😂. Anyway I'm so glad I found this sight tonight. It seems most of the others were at camp in the 70's. Since you're younger than Joe you probably remember a lot of them. So far as I've read I don't recognize any names but I'll keep reading and see if I recognize some more.

I never heard of that incident, I was a camper there in 1966 and in 67 and 68 was a waitress. we always had a good time. I didn't like being a camper the cabin was buggy the showers were ice cold and I got sick a couple of times. when I was a waitress it was a better cabin we even had a living room but we worked long hours for ten dollars a week it was an escape from parents and the long boring summer though. lots of good memories

Does anyone out there remember "The Red Dot Man" that would leave a trail of seaweed around the cabins at night? I was there for two weeks with my two older brothers. I remember well being herded onto a truck like cattle off to the slaughter house. I took off and tried to run away and someone rated on me as every counselor in sight setting off running after me and fending them off and made it to the big outside shower stalls to hidensure and got bagged when a counselor saw my feet the fence and was trapped like a rat being dragged out fighting and being forced to sleep in the counselors quarter so I could not take off again. Those two weeks were the longest in my life. Most kids in my cabin were always homesick. Also every evening kneeling on the cement floor of the cabin forced to recite the Rosary. The three if us could not wait to get out of boot camp or should I say "Reform School."

Cindy I remember the powdered eggs but you know the cook made them taste delicious. I was a camper in 1966 and a waitress in 1967. we had a lot of fun there were the dances every two weeks and the dance at Camp Miramar. I remember movie night and rollarskating night and of course bowling night. the wagon to the beach and just the thought of being away from naggy parents for the summer was great! lots of good memories

I was a camper around 1965, assigned as one of the "Midgets" to St. John Cabin. One of the fondest memories of my childhood. We lived at the Franklin Field Housing Project in Dorchester, so Green Harbor was another world compared to the sea of red brick in Dorchester. I remember everything from the beac to archery to cabin insoections. I only went for 2 weeks, but these were the best 2 weeks of my childhood. Thanks

Camp Cedar Crest is one of my fondest childhood memories! For two weeks every summer during the 60's, Camp Cedar Crest provided me with my best weeks of my year. Daily mass, trips to the beach in the back of the truck, the Canteen, arts and crafts, archery, and field day are some of my favorite reflections. I learned how to swim at Camp Cedar Crest. Remember the steamed toast? I even enjoyed the competitive challenge of keeping our cabins clean. Thank you also, to the organization that provided me a scholarship each summer. Camp Cedar Crest made a positive influence on my life and I will never forget the kind and generous spirit of the camp.

I remember fondly when I was a camper there in the late 50 s . always looked forward to riding the truck to green harbor beach to go swimming.got best camper award my first year.in my final year there a few friends and I decided to climb over the fence where the showers where and raid the cornfields on the other side. Still I learned a lot from the counselors.I'm 64 now and still remember how much fun I had. .

For all those interested. Camp Cedar Crest has a Facebook page. Several of us meet a couple of times a year. Sometimes North Shore, sometimes in Marshfield. It is ALWAYS a great time. So Camper, Counselor, or Kitchen Boy (that's me) stop in.

I have very fond memories of the 3 years I attended camp in 1969, 1971, and 1972. Marching to the dining hall, Softball, Capture the Flag, The Bonfire at the end of each session, and of course the Red Truck with the wooden railings which drove us down to Duxbury Beach.

I thought the meals were substantial considering how cheap it was to go to camp 25.00 a week in 1966. Ginny T wow you remember the Pantry Shelf restaurant my parents would take me there when they visited. everyone would always complain about the eggs (powdered) but cook was the best and she made them taste great. I remember the canteen and spending the 5.00 a week my mom gave me. we did gimp and leather in arts and crafts. I loved to dance so the dances were great. Frannie I know you don't remember but I did. we had a dance coming up and I hated my stuff. you lent me one of your flowered suits and I looked awesome. I miss the old gang sometime I would like to go to bickfords and see you guys again and see how we all look.

So happy to see there is actually a web site for this place with history on this camp. I lived in Everett, belonged to Immaculate Conception and went to this camp with my cousin about 1946 or 47. We stayed in barrack-type bldgs, meals were served in "mess hall" style. We sat at the same place for all meals and had a bucket brigade to wash our dishes in place. Any left-over bread was saved and the next day we had bread pudding. My cousin thought it was a "fat camp" as the food was not very tasty. Going to the beach in a truck was the excitement of the week.

Hi all, I left a couple of comments under the Minstrel show pic. Had great fun reading comments. It seems a lifetime ago but what fun and fond memories . I couldn't find a Facebook page for Cedar Crest Massachusetts. Birch beer, the Pantry shelf, that truck, those seminarians who we were warned by Mons Hartigan to " not fraternize with" when I started as a waitress. Thanks Larry and Rich, my mother ( mrs Thompson, now 92) just sent me a really good photo of a roller skating night out. Must be around 1964. Ginny T

hi everybody; haven't heard from anyone in a while but hoe all is good. remember i told you i have friends in marshfield right on the beach, our same beloved beach is so messed up from the storms it breaks my heart, but we did walk along the beach as far as we could go, and all i could think of is CAMP and what great times we had there, all of us. If we had any sense we could start our own camp, wouldn't that be fun, maybe we could show these kids what it was like to have a REAL GOOD TIME hope to hear from you guys love renee

wow long long time ago.... I was 14 when I first went to Camp Cedar crest in 1966. I cant believe its been 49 years already?? I liked the camp and the dances also when I became a waitress in 67 we got to go to Camp Miramar in Duxbury to go to an end of summer dance. we had the best times had our own group I remember carole Sheehan Renee Jordan and the great Fran Burke who taught me all I knew about sneaking to the boys camp heh heh... I met my first boyfriend there he was a camper I was a year older. don't know what ever happened to him. I remember the minstral show when we wore the fat (black Ladies) outfits and I almost lost my "bosom" down the aisle to the song here comes the minstral parade I remember rich Michalski as Master of Ceremonies. lots of fond memories Kathy(Condardo) Greenstein

I hope that changes...this is such a cool idea...especially for Cedar Crest Campers who had and still have such great memories of camp. Really great to see a few NEW pictures. WHERE can I get old postcards of the camp? I love the one of the Girl's Rec Hall! Used to go up there every two weeks for the dances. First time I ever kissed a girl. Attended for two weeks, 1955....I was eight. I enjoyed until an abcessed tooth took me to a local dentist to have it yanked out. The big excitement was when a lion got loose in the area (real or not, we never saw the lion but we were told to stay in our cabin after the movies) Remember the stake truck ride to the beach, and ice cold showers when we got back. This was the first shower I ever had! After 2 days, all we did was wet our heads, and sprinkle our towels with water to fool the seminarian/ councillors. For real fun we tried to steal each other's towels on the way to or from the showers and hope the girls camp could see the occasional nudity. The food was not great but I enjoyed the hash and pancakes was another first for me. That fall we moved from Everett, so I didn't go again. J. Butler. Now of cape cod

Steve I was a camper in 1966 and a waitress in 1967. I remember the waitress cabins those old broken down barracks with cold showers no heat and no privacy we had no doors on the rooms because they didn't trust us. we worked 7 days a week with two breaks for !0.00 a week. I had spaghetti in my hair mash potatos on my clothes but never forgot all the good times the dances the movies the minstral show. loads of fun for the whole summer it did make you responsible and you learned a lot.

Steve Falvey from Saugus has many memories of the Camp and the great group of seminarians who ran the programs. Does anyone remember the Friday night fights under the lights? How about riding in an open rack truck to the beach on benches singing the whole time.Steve Falvey One of the seminarians was into Shortwave/ Ham radio and onetime he connected with (I seem to remember) a fighter pilot who was overseas. Gymp was just about the coolest thing to this 10 year old. My best memories ever. I was an altar boy at Immaculate Conception and knew Fr Hartigan. Greetings, Great to see the webpage is back thanks to McDude. I will have to meet and thank him personnaly for keeper the Cedar Crest memory going. The camp alumni had a breakfast at Bickfords in Stoneham on 5 April 2014. Attending: Richard Michalski, Peter Iovanni, Larry Doucette, Hugh Morgan, Dick Stetson, Bobby Hunt and Paul Palermo.
