Update.....This gallery is now reserved for all my GHO shots from 2006 to 2013...shots in 2010 -13 were taken with a Canon 500F4 and 1.4X TC ( 700MM F5.6) while most other images were taken with a 400 F5.6 with and without converter. The most recent are from April-May 2013 and include the two owlets from Mud Lake and the singular owlet from Petrie Island...

A belated update: The owlet learned to hunt and was returned to Petrie Island as a juvie/adult on Oct 16 2010 where/when it was released. It was seen by some folks in the weeks afterwards but I did not get to see it.....

The Owlet is now in Toronto at The Owl Foundation where a surrogate mother GHO will care for it as well as two other owlets . The Foundation is set up for minimal human contact and in this instance the Owlets will eventually learn to hunt for their food. A corridor system allows them to distance themselves from the parent when the time comes and in and around October of this year, the Owl(et) will be returned to the Wild Bird Care Centre and they will then return it to Petrie Island where it will be released.

I called the wildbird care centre today to inquire about a story you had heard, about returning the owlet to its nest. The centre informed me that they tried to do that yesterday. Someone who is used to climbing trees brought the owlet up to what's left of the nest from which it had fallen from the past weekend. Unfortunately, the mother owl did not respond to any of the owlet's cries. So, tbe owlet was brought back down the tree and returned to the centre, I think, and will be released once it is ready.

It is quite sad that the only owlet this year ( that I had seen) fell from the nest either last night or today during some severe wind. The front of the nest appears intact but almost the entire rear of the squirrels nest is gone.The mother was frantic and calling. At first we thought perhaps a Hawk had gotten it while she was away hunting. It was suggested that the base of the tree be checked in case it was a fall due to the wind..The Owlet was found in the leaves below the tree and appeared OK from a distance but hard to tell.at that time Caution was excercised as Great Horned Owls are known to attack people if they think the Owlet is in danger .The Wildbird Care Centre was contacted and it was suggested that the Owlet be brought to them. It seems this thiis a rather common occurence and last year one of the Owlets did not survive a fall from the nest. . A couple of the lads got the Owlet into a box with a blanket and it did appear to be OK but then again we have no idea how long it had been there and the air was quite chilly and the ground was wet and cold as well. James brought it to the centre and hopefully he got it there before they closed at 4 PM. I have not heard anything since but the female GHO continued to call and fly periodically from one tree to another for the next hour. Not a happy time to say the least! If I hear any news I will post it here....I have some shots but it will take time...

Wonderful pictures of these beautiful birds. We had a nest with one owlet in a tee right outside a window of the condo we rented in florida in the winter. Unfortunately the owlet was very small and we had to leave before it was big enough to fly. http://www.pbase.com/exzim/image/75186116

Thanks everyone for the very nice and positive comments. I will keep posting more shots as long as I see them and and can get a decent photo. One Owlet in particular is really flying well now.
