Great Grey Owls





This is a gallery dedicated to our most recent GGO irruption. These birds have left the Northern forests and are coming into our areas in search of food... voles, mice, shrews... Their long legs and small feet coupled with their keen sight and sense of hearing allow them to find prey above and below the snow. The largest of our owls but mostly feathers and they are easily outweighed by Great Horned Owls and Snowy Owls. Their small feet and claws cannot take on larger prey compared to the Snowies and GHO. These images are from December 2012, January through March 2013 and are from several locations.

These are really quite spectacular. I have seen many other GGO shots this winter, and was suspecting they were captive birds, but an irruption explains it.
