For several Springs now I have chuckled while watching one or more Black-capped Chickadees turn into tiny woodpeckers as they carve out a cavity for a new home /nest(?) The bird in this shot can now fit 70% of its body into the cavity and sometimes spits out the wood chips then and there but on other occasions takes larger pieces of wood away from the tree. The tree in this case is a 100+ year old Manitoba Maple in my yard and the bird is making the hole on a cut where a large branch was removed last year. There is already a cavity about 10 feet from this new one that Chickadees drilled out last year but it seems a new one is needed instead......
