Gingerbread Castle in Hamburg, NJ

Another NJ landmark ready to be torndown.
I drove by it the other day and took this pic... I also notice a for sale sign.

save the castle - http://castle.jimnshelle.net/

"In 1928, F. H. Bennett, inventor of Milk Bone Dog Biscuits and owner of Wheatsworths Mills, had a vision of creating a gingerbread castle with figures of fairy tale characters. He hired world renowned set designer and architect Joseph Urban to design the project. The Gingerbread Castle opened in 1930. It operated continuously for many years and became a tourist attraction for youngsters long before the establishment of today’s theme parks. Years ago, the Borough of Hamburg commemorated the Gingerbread Castle by establishing street signs shaped like the castle (many of which are still in existence today) and naming many of the streets after fairy tale characters. The police department also continues to wear a patch displaying an image of the Gingerbread Castle." Taken from - http://www.dupontcastle.com/castles/gingerbr.htm

Hi Phil, Yes the Gingerbread Castle is for sale. As a little girl it was always my favorite place and when we moved up to this area 26 years ago i was so happy to be close to it. Shortly after we moved up here, it was closed down. A person by the name of Joe Defeo purchased the castle, restored it. When opening day came i went with my fiance, and parents. I asked if I could thank the man who restored this awsome childhood memory. When I met him I thanked him and said I want to get married here Mr. Defeo, please please think about it. He said i already am my daughter asked the same thing. Sure enough....Kim got married in 1990 there and I got married in 1991. My wedding was one i will never forget and my dream really did come true.
