Having left Instanbul behind us, we head back through the Dardanelles for Santorini, a Greek Island.
Santorini is a volcanic island, which in acient times was known as Strongili (circular in Greek).
Strongili suffered a huge eruption in around 1500BC and many consider this eruption to have been
the cause of the destruction of the Minoan civilisation on Crete.
(Some even link the destruction of Strongili with Atlantis.)
The Centre of the Caldera sank and today the Island creates an almost circular rim,
leaving an entrance to a beautiful lagoon for ships to sail into. Passengers are taken ashore by Tender.
The port is called Skala and at the top of the cliff lies the town of Fira, which can be reached by cable car
or you can choose to take a donkey ride up the steps which zig zag their way up the cliff.
We took a boat trip out to the islet of Nea Kameni, which is the cone of the volcano regrowing out of the logoon.
The top crator emits steam from several vents. Though I have to say my wife and I didn't make it to the top.
(Linda is diabetic and needed to rest).
