3M "Friction" Tape wrapped around belled end of a 1-1/4" PVC pipe provides grip to remove the front trim ring without damage. Pipe of the appropriate size can be used for almost any trim ring.
Also works well for lens cells.
Use caution not to touch tape to lens elements themselves since the tape contains a tarry substance.
