I don't kill snakes unless I know they are poisonous...and I'm
assuming this one is not. He was in my butterfly garden, but I
must say it wasn't until Pbase and photo a day that I was crazy
enough to get right on top of one and take a photo! Remember, I
have no lenses, just my little Coolpix. I sent a copy to my Grandson
hoping he can identify this guy and tell me he is harmless because
he took off going West shortly after this photo. Had a pretty little
red tongue that he kept sticking out, but I didn't catch that.
I think I'd prefer butterflies or ducks, or something else. LOL

Just heard from Hugh, he thinks it is a garter snake, but isn't sure
so said "Don't pet it!" Don't worry, Hugh, I won't.

This little guy is called a “Garter Snake” and is totally harmless. This particular one looks like a California (Western States) Garter Snake as you can see one of three (and sometimes two) yellow stripes that run from the head to the tail. Believe it or not, they make wonderful pets as they are very gentle snakes. Usually the California Garter Snake bellies are bright yellow, but I’ve also seen them pinkish and even orange tinged. Yeah, ... snakes are a guy thing. LOL!

Not my idea of a pleasant encounter. Do you have a reptile park you could email this photo to Petesie to have it identified !

You are far braver than I. Am not sure that is a non-poisonous one--eeewwww.
