Topkapi Palace was the primary residence of the Ottoman sultans for ~400 years. At its peak, as many as 4000 people worked or lived here. However, sultans since the 18th century preferred to stay in palaces built along the Bosporus. In 1856, the court of the sultan was permanently relocated to the European style Dolmabahçe Palace, as part of a futile move towards modernization by emulating Western living styles. Since Turkey became a republic in 1923, it has been a museum. |
The palace complex is divided into four main courtyards. Besides exhibits in historical chambers, it commands a 270° view of the Bosporus Strait and the Sea of Marmara. |
