Imperial Palace 皇居

Located in Chiyoda Ward 千代田区 in central Tokyo, the Imperial Palace was once called the Edo Castle, the official residence of the Tokugawa Shogunate 徳川幕府, until the Meiji Restoration. After the Emperor moved here from Kyoto in 1868, it was renamed Tokyo Castle and then Imperial Castle 皇城. The Imperial Palace is open to the public on only two days each year. Peeking at its landmark double bridges Nijūbashi 二重橋 from its front lawn is what most tourists do.
