Ancient Rome

As the capital of the ancient Roman Empire, the city of Rome has many monuments from the imperial period. The single largest structure is the Coliseum. Next to it is the Roman Forum, an ancient marketplace with a collection of public buildings and temples. Of all the ancient powers, the Romans are the only one that built lasting structures for the public, while other civilizations built palaces, tombs and fortifications.
