Ruins of St. Paul’s

澳門 Macau view map

大三巴牌坊

The façade is 27m tall and 23.5m wide.
The most famous landmark of Macau is on the UNESCO World Heritage list

In 1825, the young Englishman John Bowring was inspired by the sight of this ruin. He wrote the words of the hymn "In the Cross of Christ I Glory".
Bowring later became the 4th governor of Hong Kong in 1854.

In the cross of Christ I glory,
Towering o’er the wrecks of time;
All the light of sacred story
Gathers round its head sublime.
