Built on the ground of the Roman Imperial Lateran Palace given by Constantine to the Bishop of Rome, the Arcibasilica Papale di San Giovanni in Laterano is the official ecclesiastical seat (cathedral) of popes as bishops of Rome.
The 1735 neo-classical façade by Alessandro Galilei features a statue of Christ the Savior on top franked by John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and other later saints.
