The Basilica of Sagrada Familia is the most famous tourist attraction of Barcelona and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Construction of this church dedicated to the Holy Family started in 1882 with private donations. In 1883, Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) the most famous Spanish architect took over the project that consumed the rest of his life. Gaudi transformed the design into his own, combining the traditional Gothic and the curvilinear Art Nouveau styles. After Gaudi’s untimely death, construction was interrupted during the Spanish civil war and resumed intermittently after WW2. It is currently scheduled to be completed in 2026, 100 years after Gaudi’s death.
Of the four exterior sides, the apse was completed during Gaudi’s lifetime. The three remaining façades (Nativity, Passion and Glory) are to be elaborately decorated. Dedicated to birth of Jesus, the Nativity Façade followed Gaudi’s vision of naturalistic style with ornate curvy decorations around Christmas stories. Dedicated to the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus, the Passion Façade is austere with mostly straight lines and decorated with modern sculptures designed by a team led by Josep Maria Subirachs. Still under construction, the Glory Façade will be the future entrance to the central nave of the church. The interior of Sagrada Familia is in the shape of a cross with total length of 90m, 60m of which is the nave. The ceiling soars 45m above the nave. We visited on June 10 2016, exactly 90 years after the death of Gaudi. |
