Tallinn, the capital of the small Baltic nation of Estonia.
Except for a brief period of independence between 1918-1939, Estonia was under Russian rule until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. It is now an EU member with the Euro as its official currency.
Like most medieval towns, Old Town Tallinn is divided into two halves, Upper and Lower Old Town. Lower Old Town was home to the common people, including merchants and craftsmen with their guild houses around Town Hall Square. Upper Old Town on a hill top was home to the ruling classes. Today, their cathedrals remains, but the palaces are mostly used as government offices and embassies. There is a fortified wall separating the two halves.
The Old Town of Tallinn is small enough to tour on foot.
