Many National Hockey League players spent their formative
years on a frozen pond in the depths of winter honing their
skills with puck and stick.

In this case it's a marina on a lake but essentially the same.

I grew up playing pond hockey, too. In a suburb of Boston and then later in St Paul. Nice shot.
