Not the best shot as I arrived at this location very late in the day but I had to see this beautiful little owl. This is the earliest I have ever seen a Northern Hawk Owl in our region. All the signs are there for more to come and a very good chance to see Great Gray Owls. The food supply in the north is apparently low, the voles are at the peak of their seven year cycle and are everywhere. Numerous northern finches such as Pine Grosbeaks, Siskins, Redpolls and Evening Grosbeaks are appearing. This Northern Hawk Owl was putting on quite a show flying from perch to perch and dropping to the ground after voles. I suspect south of the airport will be busy over the next few weeks. The Owl will more than likely settle in and stay for the winter. Photographed on Bowesville Road, Ottawa, Ontario. Canon 7D, 400mm f5.6L, tripod.
