Finch Feeding Frenzy

Finch Feeding Frenzy

Clarence-Rockland, Ontario

A backyard shot from the past weekend. At least 30 or more Goldfinches showed up, 6 Pine Siskins and at least 12 Common Redpolls - they would not come down to the feeder though as the birch cones were too good to leave. I wish I could have got the entire niger seed feeder in the frame as there were Pine Siskins on the perches (out of the frame) above the Goldfinches! I almost forgot how greedy Siskins are, as they would chase away the Goldfinces to get the best seat at the buffet! All these songbirds quickly drew the attention of a Sharp-shinned Hawk that narrowly missed my head as it attempted to snag some finches perched above me.

Great cooperation within this flock - both for feeding and allowing you this scene.

Beautiful shot Bill. Send a few my way as I've only had a few Finches at my feeder so far this Fall.

I think they posed there under your direction bill. This is an adorable shot, great colors and excellent details, and a great background to enhance the shape of the birds. V

This is a fantastic shot! Birds have been absent from feeders here lately but hopefully I'll get my share soon.

A great backyard shot and story to go with it! Sounds like you had a nice gathering of finches there! I am looking forward to seeing the same here. Hasn't happened yet - birds have been scarce around my feeders and all through the woods around here in the west of Ottawa the last week, but I am sure they will come soon.
