Black Witch (Ascalapha odorata)

La Georgina, Cerro de la Muerte

Male
Recognised by the comma-shaped mark on the forewings.

This big moth, 15 cm or more, is a strong flyer. It is mainly tropical but it can be found north to Florida. The name Black Witch comes from Mexican folklore, which suspiciously considers it the "butterfly of death". What a coincidence to find this moth in the cold night at 3100 meters above sea level, on Cerro de la Muerto (Hill of Death).
