Place de la Concorde

Created between 1757 and 1779. The Square was orignally dedicated to Louis XV. His statue was torn down during the revolution and this became the site of the guillotine. Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antionette were killed here.
The place became Place de la Concorde in 1795. In the centre stands an Egyptian obelisk from the temple of Luxor, donated to Louis Philippe in 1831. It is 23 metres and is covered with hieroglyphics which illustrate the glorious deeds of the phoraoh Ramses II.
