Mom and Dad

Female (left) and male (right) Gila Woodpeckers at the entrance to a nest cavity in a Saguaro cactus. The hole in the cactus is about 15 feet (3 meters) up. I cropped each image to almost the same field of view for each shot to give a relative comparison to the size differences between the female and male. They did have a youngster they were feeding, but it was at another hole in the cactus. I think my presence kept them from attending to the young one, so I did not stay long. Their young one can be seen here: http://www.pbase.com/image/79658072
