What can I say ... Venice ... so many of man's greatest artistic achievements came out of this amazing watery city. Arriving at Marco Polo airport after a long overseas flight from Canada was like stepping out of a time machine.
Venice is a visual city that requires exploration by foot. Yes, the "usual" tourist spots were spectacular, but it was the back alleys and unique "finds" that makes me want to come back. Strolling through the deserted city at 4:30am, accompanied with a few very late inebriated partyers, or vendors getting their market stalls ready, was surreal. It was a stark contrast to the very busy summer day ahead. Since I enjoy crowds as much as solitude, I was a happy camper all the time!
