Billy C. 07/01/2008 My church from New Jersey just returned from a misson trip there to assist in re-building some of the homes from the devastation. Almost three years later there is so much work to do there, I think everyone North of the Mississippi, thinks that most of the area is back to normal. No! No! No! With only 22% of the population returning even the WalMart refuses to re-open because of the limited number of residents.

what are you going to do about the lower ninth ward? it has been two years since katrina. are you waiting for another hurricane to come to new orleans to clean it up? i am a former new orleanian, i am appalled at the little effort you guys are taking to clean up the lower ninth ward. when betsy came through new orleans the clean up was quick. seems like the local government is dragging their buts in the clean up efforts in the lower ninth ward.

hello, i have tried to contact mayor nage three x's this week to get him to testify at the gonzalez hearings to insist theat mr gonzalez has never been there to appoint more district attorneys,procecutors and judges and demand funds for jails since katrina. i have insisted that hud and the epa clean up the ninth wards and other areas since they remain unclaimed. there has to be accomadation for the lower and middle class to live in order for your city to be the melting pot it was. we should talk the epa,health and human services,and justice departments have completely apbandened you unlike nyc aftter 9/11 because these people are middle class and poor but they are the workers and tax payer the spirit of the city. you can reack me at wphillips@columbus.rr.com

I think it's funny how people are focusing on where these photos are concentrated. Does it matter? these photos represent a part of America. This is one photographer's posting. He has captured what he could. The photos captured the soul of the disaster. Why criticize the location? The point is that this area suffered ALONG with other areas. This is an angle not a complete photo documentary. It doesn't matter what economical class these people are in, they all suffered greatly. I didn't see forms to fill out for income verification to see who got on busses or were given food or sent to other cities for shelter. For the people who lost everything they experienced loss as a city or a community or as a country. It is sad that there is a "me too, me too" attitude about something as tragic as this. Thank you for these pictures. I am a rssident of Lakeview and live on the 17th St canal. I wanted to take pictures after the storm because I have always enjoyed photography. However, I could not process what I was seeing and feeling enough to record it on film. Thank you for being able to function at a time when most of us couldn't. PS to all those that think we should live somewhere else. Didn't 5 hurriicanes hit the state of Florida in one year's season recently? Isn't Florida bordered on 3 sides by large bodies of water and built on swamp land? Funny when your governor's name is Bush the calvery comes fast d and as many times as necessary!!!

Were those really necessary items to steal in order to survive the hurricane? Also, the $2000 debit cards spent on tatoos, designer clothing and purses, diamonds, and adult entertainment, to name just a few. Somehow to me, this doesn't fit the profile of a person in grief who just lost everything they had. What about Mississippi? My working ex-daughter- in-law with 3 childern had to evacuate the MS Gulf Coast. She tried to get help to buy groceries to take back. NO, NO couldn't get help. We gave her money for gas to get back and groceries to take back, and we kept the children. I was in Wal-Mart, couldn't walk for all the welfare recipients with carts full of groceries, talking on their cell phones.....and I live in Central MS. It made me sick to my stomach....

Hi my name is Justin Lofton and I'm 14 from Mississippi. And all I have to say is that mostly everyone in the south were affected by Katrina not only New Orleans and Boloxi. We also in McComb recieved affects of the storm that we are still dealing with and trying to get over. People here have lost there homes been without power and so on. And only coming to New Orleans 3 times out of my whole life I have never in my life seen Louisianians act so rude before Katrina hit. What I mean when I say that is that you were not the only ones hit by the Hurricane we were to even though we didn't get flooded we still got 120 mph winds here believe it or not. And all I have to say to you all is that the Gulf Coast of Mississippi got over it, and so can you. That all Justin!!!!

Hi I was born and raised in New Orleans and lved it, I was their on the 29 of Aug. had to leave thinking it was going to hit our part of Florida, Ft Walton Bch. When this occuries I had a number of emails pretaining to the damage, It was hard foe me to believe and I cried and cried and haven,t been back, scared to. I'm from Albuquerque, NM but Lived in Metairie and worked in New orleans for the last Ten Years. My family talked me into leaving back to Albuquerque to be with the rest of the family only 3 months before Katrina hit. I think you all know what I am refering to in that our country needs to give as much about its own people as it does about others. Thank you for the pictures. I grew up in Metairie, but left when I was 10 years old. My family, including my mom and brother lived in Arabi and lost everything. Thankfully, they have since regained their composure and are living in Metairie. I still cannot believe some of the pictures when I view. I like the web site and i just want to thank you for giving pictures of what really happend in new orleans. I am from that are and I moved to kanas city and they are just talking adout the every thing that happened down ther but they have no idea, and I will give them this site so thay can see some real pictuers.

I guess the reason don't have any pictures of the Mississippi gulf coast is.... becouse there ain't nothin there to take a pictur of? I guess the families that lost EVERY THING lived in tents? My thoughts and prayers are with all the people who have suffered so much loss. As I sit in San Antonio, Texas it makes my heart break to see the damage and destruction to such a lovely city. This is expecially meaningful to me since I was born there and lived in New Orleans and Metairie. My heart has never strayed from returning to Louisiana to live. This hurricane and its devestation will not stop my desire to return. I know the people of New Orleans have faced the fire of 1766 and a terrible hurricane in the early 1900's and still have returned stronger and better. It is this strength and never say die attitude that makes New Orleans my kind of Town. Lorraine D.

Hello, great website by the way, but New Orleans wasnt the only city hit, you know. Sure, everyone wants to focus their photography on the Big Easy, because it's a metropolis that was shut down, but other areas suffered just as well. Plaquemines Parish and St. Bernard Parish suffered immeasurably. Buras and Venice all the way up to Golden Meadow was devastated, far worse than New Orleans. The one who posted the comment FROM Buras, good luck, god bless you. These areas were simply devastated by Katrina. I hope the geographical features will remain the same, for these areas are sinking anyway. The strip of land that Buras and Venice lie on is filling with seawater, adding to more water, less land. The Chandeleur Islands lost more than half of their total land area, and several historical lighthouses were demolished. God Bless all in Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes, and anyone who had to deal with Katrina.

Hi my name is Jalonda LaFrance and I am 13yrs old and im from neworleans and our house was under six feet of water but what i really want to say is that ''The grown ups think that they are the only ones thats depressed but the older kids have feelings to and I think that the parents should sit down and talk to some of their kids about whats happening in life.I would love to have a counselor to help me and my family espress our feelings in a possitive way,instead of everybody stressing out with they hair falling out,smoking,drinking and taking there anger out on other people.we'll now we are out of the shelter in a fema triler and trying to survive off of television with no cable food we are not used of eating and being displaced from my cousins,aunties and uncles is like living in misery.we''ll my fingers are starting to hurt but this is what ihad to say.I really hope NewOrleans,Portsulphur,venice,Buras,and every thing else get fixed by 06/07.well peace out...........

I live in Buras Louisiana, it seem like everyone has forgot about us. The hurricane hit us first and hit us hard. We also got more water from hurricand Rita. The damage to lower Plaquemines goes on for about 50 miles.

I've been working the hurricane relief efforts for six weeks now. Much has been improved, but there is so much more to do. Years of work will pass before the area is in a "somewhat" pre-Katrina condition. As bad as the damage was in New Orleans....a "total devastation" level was reached as you went towards the mouth of the Mississippi. From Buras to Venice, at the end of the road, one sees evidence of the destructive forces that make our planet home. I wrote the following to my friends and family....about one month after the storm hit: "I went south on LA 23 the other day....through Buras to Venice. I went to take photos, but after I saw the destruction I just forgot about the camera. Everything was destroyed...everything. Homes were flattened or washed off their foundations. Boats and ships were blown from the shipping channels and the Mississippi to dry land....hundreds of yards and more away from their original locations. I've worked disaster relief for dozens of tornadoes and four or five hurricanes...and I've seen the results of battle on cities and the earth...but I've never seen anything like what Katrina did to St Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes. After about an hour of driving around, Dave LeBlanc asked me why I wasn't taking any photos. I didn't have a good answer...I guess the closest explaination is that it felt like I would be taking photos of a funeral...or auto accident. It just didn't feel right. We drove into a marina in Venice. A local shrimper stopped us and asked if we were there to repair the docks so that he could get back to work. I wish like hell that I could have answered "yes," but I couldn't. The people on LA 23 are strong willed people. Most that I talked to were determined to rebuild....but there was something about their eyes. Even though they smiled...or seemed to be in a good mood....there was that look about their eyes...something like the "thousand yard stare" that soldiers get from battle fatigue. I wonder if they will have the strength to rebuild...I hope they do...hell, I know that they will. Then...just yesterday...I went into New Orleans. We had finished the day's work and were going to Chalmette to a longtime friend's house to help clear everything from his house which had been flooded by 8 to 10 feet of water. On the way, we passed through the 9th Ward...it was empty for all purposes. Little or no traffic on the streets. The houses and commercial buildings were still there...but no people. It was eerie. We arrived in Chalmette and pulled into the upper-middle-class neighborhood that my friend had called home. The damage was evident from the beginning. Boats in trees. Trees on houses. Cars on top of houses. Cars on top of boats. One could tell that most of the residents had been back at one time. Piles of furniture and personal belongings were stacked in the front yards of most homes. But there, as in the 9th Ward, there were no people. We found the house and entered....mud at least 12 inches deep throughout the house. The sheetrock from the ceilings had been reached in the house and had fallen on top of the mud. Furniture and personal belongings were strewn all over the place. We began by looking for anything salvageable...we found some...mainly dinnerware, ceramics, and some other small items that weren't damaged by the mud and water. He found a box of old photos of his family which, by miracle, had only moderate damage. I told him that I would restore them for him...no charge...because I saw the pain in his eyes when he looked at them. We then began the hard work...shovelling the mud from the house. It was still wet because the windows were still boarded up...but that wasn't the real problem. The real problem was the stench. Have you ever heard of the term "shovelling sh*t?" That was what it was like. Even with masks, boots and gloves, I almost got sick...but we kept on shovelling. Before I go any further...I want to tell everybody here about what happened right after we got to his house. We were walking down the sidewalk of the neighborhood....looking at the different levels of damage to the houses. There was also a layer of mud (dried in this case) in every yard and sidewalk. It would crunch and crackle as we stepped. Then, I noticed something. I told everybody to stop....and listen. There was no sound at all...nothing. It was so silent that my ears felt like they had pressure on them...like I had cupped my hands over my ears in a soundproof room. The term "deafening silence" really fit in this case. It felt like something out of a movie....a movie about the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. Like something out of The Twilight Zone....or the Left Behind series of books. Then, as if on cue, a single bird started chirping from one of the nearby trees. It was one of the most beautiful sounds I had ever heard."
