Newspaper Rock (detail)

Early settlers and explorers were probably responsible for the "Newspaper Rock" name but it's interesting that the Navajo name for the site is Tse' Hane' meaning "rock that tells a story". The earlier petroglyphs on this panel (of which this image only shows a small detail) are associated with the Anasazi (Pueblo II-III period - about 850-1300 AD). The rest are associated with the recent historic Ute. The Ute loved horses and they depicted them frequently in their art. A horse and rider can be seen in this image dating those particular petroglyphs to the last few hundred years. A large circular design representing a shield or medicine wheel can be seen on the right.
