Early settlers and explorers were probably responsible for the "Newspaper Rock" name but it's interesting that the Navajo name for the site is Tse' Hane' meaning "rock that tells a story". The earlier petroglyphs on this panel (of which this image only shows a small detail) are associated with the Anasazi (Pueblo II-III period - about 850-1300 AD). The rest are associated with the recent historic Ute. The Ute loved horses and they depicted them frequently in their art. A horse and rider can be seen in this image dating those particular petroglyphs to the last few hundred years. A large circular design representing a shield or medicine wheel can be seen on the right.
