ATSF Railroad Reefer Facilities

The images displayed here were taken over many years. Some (Needles for example) appear to be in the 50's or earlier. Others are more recent possibly in the 60's. The earlier images show how many people were involved in working the ice docks. In later years manual labor was replaced by icing machines which were faster AND cut labor costs. If available, the original captions are included. Some explain the functions taking place. Of particular interest is the level of detail that is visible including the tools used to handle the ice cakes, bags of salt (I assume) stacked on the Needles dock and the pre-cool tubes in some of the shots. Taken as a group they give a fairly complete explanation of the reefer icing process.

These pictures come from two different sources, 1-Santa Fe Railroad photos and 2-R. Delano images from the depression area work he did for the OWI board. They are depicted here for the use of modelers and/or others who have an interest in such things. They are not available for sale as far as I know. Similarly I know of no plans available for the different ice machines. In some cases I used Photoshop to enlarge shots of the ice machines.
