The use of ice reefers was pretty much over before my time. My understanding is that the shipper specified what icing service he wanted. In some case ice cakes were simply dumped into the end bunkers, others wanted chunks or crushed. Some wanted salt mixed in, others did not. Before the use of the machines men on top of the cars used tools to break up the ice.

As mechanized as this was at the time, can you tell me how the 300# ice cakes were positioned once they were conveyed into the reefer? Were men in the cars muscling the big ice cakes into place or what?
