Moose Factory Island

Moose Factory Island is located near the mouth of the Moose River in Northeastern Ontario. It is a short boat/taxi/helicopter ride from Moosonee (depending on the season). Although I go there frequently, I do not have a lot of pictures (yet?). Some of them are found in my Ecolodge gallery. The island is a popular tourist destination. Moose Factory is the site of the oldest(1673)English settlement in Ontario and home of the Moose Cree First Nation. First Nations (sometimes called Bands) are called Tribes in the United States. The Moose Cree First Nation controls much of the land in Moose Factory and provides many services to its members and other residents. It has a website at www.moosecree.com .

Great pics. Thanks for posting them. I lived in Attawapiskat for a few years and met my wife there. We traveled the ice road to Moose Factory to see our first child via ultra-sound at the Hospital. Your pics bring back a pile of happy memories. Cheers!

Moose Factory is an place where you can feel right at home. After coming to the island it was hard to leave when the time came. Your people are bone of my bone and blood of my blood. Like family is what it was. Miss Margret Schofield open her home to a stranger and made my two week stay wonderful as well tempting me with her awsome baking. My time at the island was the best ever .I loved meeting everyone. I loved the whole event. The only problem it was to short of a stay. It was a great gathering. Loved the varity of music. I heard a lot about the Smalls before i came there. They are one awsome band. I have come to love moose meat its my favorite, ten times better than beef. I have been coverted. It was wonderful helping out cleaning and the cutting of the meat with the elders. The Pow wow was so much fun. Your island is so beautiful and breath taking. It was awsome meeting the chief such a privilge. I send my love to all. Again, Miss Margret thanks for the love and compassion that you gave me. Yes! Lived in Moose Factory for 3 years, and recently moved back "down south". Miss everyone like you wouldn't beleive, and get teary looking at the pictures. Moose Factory really changes you...You can take the girl out of Moose, but you can't take the Moose out of the girl....Miss you!

It is nice to see pictures of Moose Factory on the web. I left MF in the late sixties after living there for 10 years. I see lots of changes. My father was the dentist for the area during the sixties and took many pictures of MF and the coast up to Baffin and Severn. His name was Dr. Maurice Beaudry. I plan on posting these pictures to the web when I finally finish digitizing them, there are over 7,000.

We are new here and find everyone so helpful as we adjust to no paved roads and walking almost everywhere, and ice roads and water taxis. But we are loving it. Thanks for sharing you lives with us.

I remember living there, too, for about 2 years during the early 90's, and yes, it could do for some improvement. The roads, for one.
