Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London, sits on the north bank of the River Thames. It dates from 1066 as a part of the Norman Conquest of England. The most recognized part of the fortress, the White Tower, from which the fortress gets its name, was built by William the Conqueror. It remains a guarded garrison as home to the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. "The Tower" as it is commonly called, is one of the most visited tourist sites in the world.
