St. Peter's Basilica — Rome, Italy

Popes have generally been men of healthy egos. You see here, under the papal coat of arms, a part of the inscription over St. Peter's Basilica that says, "IN HONOREM PRINCIPIS APOST PAVLVS V BVRGHESIVS ROMANVS PONT MAX AN MDCXII PONT VII" In English, it translates, "In honor of the prince of apostles; Paul V Borghese, supreme pontif of Rome, in the year 1612 and the seventh year of his pontificate". Pope Paul V is memorialized forever by virtue of having been pope when construction of the basilica neared its end and the facade was completed. Some have incorrectly taken the inscription to mean that the basilica was built by and/or in honor of Paul V.
