The Basilica di Santa Croce, in English the Church of the Holy Cross, is a church built by the Franciscan order between 1294 and 1385. It is the largest Franciscan order church in the world. The 19th century neo-Gothic facade was designed by the Jewish architect Niccolo Matas who managed to work a Star of David into the design at the top. Santa Croce was the parish church of young Michelangelo Buonoratti whose remains lie in the church along with such other Italian notables as Galileo, Rossini, and Machievelli. For this reason, the church is also known as the Temple of Italian Glories.
