The castle and fortress complex that is called the Tower of London derives its name from this building. The White Tower was begun under William the Conqueror in approximately 1078 AD. The White Tower is a "keep", meaning that it is the strongest, most heavily fortified building in the fortress complex. From the southern battlement, in the foreground of this photo, the White Tower stands 90 feet tall.
