July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong

AS11-40-5903.jpg

Mare Tranquillitatis - Lunar Surface

Buzz Aldrin standing on the lunar surface with the reflections of the Lunar Module and astronaut Neil Armstrong showing in his visor. Many versions of this photo add black sky above Aldrin's head. Armstrong composed the shot with no viewfinder. The heavily modified Hasselblad 500 EL camera was attached to his chest and there was no practical way to include a viewfinder. It truly was point and shoot. Just a little more down tilt and this iconic shot becomes the shot that got away. (Photo courtesy of NASA)
