If you are fortunate to have comprehensive access to Cape Canaveral, you are able to progress backward in time from the current manned launch facilities at Launch Complexes 39 A & B to the original manned launch facilities at Pad 5/6. The change in scale that took place between 1961 and 1968 is truly amazing. In this image, an unused Redstone missile, like the one used to launch Alan Shepard on the first U.S. manned space mission, sits on Pad 5 a few hundred feet from the blockhouse used to launch it. By way of contrast, the Launch Control Center for Launch Complex 39 sits 3.2 miles away from the launch pads. Any closer than 3.2 miles is in the "kill zone" if a Saturn V launch vehicle were to explode on the pad.
