This gallery chronicles a pair of nesting Red-tailed Hawks at Fort Ward Park in Alexandria, Virginia. Paul Kane and I began observing and photographing them on June 13, a week after the female parent was hit by a car, rescued by the Alexandria Animal Shelter, and released to the care of the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia. At this time, the chicks' down was beginning to be replaced with feathers. The male parent was feeding and caring for them by himself.
